Personal Social Health Education
PSHE – Intent, Implementation & Impact
Intent
At Ropsley Church of England Primary School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is integral to supporting our pupils’ personal and social development in our diverse and ever-changing community. Rooted in our school vision—"In God's image, we strive and shine: with happy hearts and inspired minds"—we aim to create a nurturing, inclusive, and supportive environment where all children feel valued and encouraged to flourish.
Through the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, our curriculum empowers children to become responsible, resilient, and respectful members of society. By embedding our core values into all aspects of school life, we enable pupils to develop emotional literacy, social skills, and an understanding of physical and mental well-being. We believe that when surrounded by a positive, supportive environment that listens to and values them, children can grow into considerate, independent learners with a lifelong love of learning.
Implementation
PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which provides a progressive and structured curriculum from Reception to Year 6. Each half-term, pupils engage with a different Jigsaw Puzzle (unit), ensuring a comprehensive approach to personal development.
The six Jigsaw Puzzles are:
- Being Me in My World – Encourages pupils to develop a sense of belonging, responsibility, and active citizenship within their school, local, and global communities.
- Celebrating Difference – Promotes respect for diversity, tackling issues such as disability, racism, bullying (including cyberbullying), and the importance of understanding and valuing differences.
- Dreams and Goals – Develops ambition, teamwork, and resilience, helping pupils set personal goals and explore aspirations within a global context.
- Healthy Me – Teaches emotional and physical well-being, including healthy lifestyles, friendships, mental health, first aid, and staying safe.
- Relationships – Focuses on building positive relationships with self and others, covering friendships, families, online safety, conflict resolution, and self-esteem.
- Changing Me – Helps children navigate change, including transitions, puberty, self-respect, and aspects of Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).
Lessons are delivered through engaging activities, discussions, stories, and reflective practices that encourage children to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe and respectful environment. PSHE is further embedded across the curriculum and school life through assemblies, pastoral support, and school-wide initiatives that promote well-being and positive relationships.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is evident in the confidence, resilience, and empathy demonstrated by our pupils. They develop a strong sense of self-worth, understanding of diversity, and the ability to form healthy, positive relationships. Through pupil voice, feedback, and ongoing assessment, we see that children feel safe, valued, and listened to.
Our pupils leave Ropsley CE Primary School equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and compassion. They understand the importance of personal well-being, respect for others, and active participation in their communities. By fostering happy hearts and inspired minds, our PSHE curriculum ensures that all children are prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school as responsible, considerate, and independent individuals.
